
VERTIGO HEAD EXERCISES
AIMS:
- To loosen up the muscles of the neck and shoulder to overcome the protective muscular spasm and tendency to move "in one piece".
- To train movement of the eyes independent of the head.
- To develop proprioceptive and visual mechanisms to compensate for a disturbance in labyrinthine function.
- To generally improve muscle coordination.
- To practice balancing under everyday conditions with special attention to developing the use of the eyes and muscle and joint sense.
- To practice head movements that cause dizziness and thus gradually overcome the disability.
- To become accustomed to moving about naturally in the daylight and darkness.
- To generally encourage the restoration of self confidence and easy spontaneous movement.
EXERCISES:
A. Seated or in bed:
- Eye movements, at first slowly, then quickly
a. Up and down
b. Side to side
c. Diagonal movements
d. Focusing on finger moving from 3 feet to 1 foot away from face
- Head movements, at first slowly, then quickly, later with eyes closed
a. Bending forward and backward
b. Turning from side to side
c. Tilting from side to side
d. Diagonal movements
- Coordinated movements of both eyes and the head in the same direction as Set A-2
- Shoulder shrugging and circling
- Bending forward and picking up objects from the ground
B. Standing (repeat Section A)
- Changing from sitting to standing position with the eyes open and shut
- Throwing ball from hand to hand (above eye level)
- Throwing ball from hand to hand under knee
- Change from sitting to standing and turning about in between
C. Moving about

Walking across the room with eyes open and then closed
- Walking up and down a slope with the eyes open and then closed
- Waling up and down steps with eyes open and then closed
- Sitting up and lying down in bed
- Standing up and sitting in a chair
- Recovering balance when pushed in each direction
- Throwing and catching a ball
- Any game involving stopping or stretching and aiming, such as bowling or shuffle board
